Returning to Work as a Mum

Hello, my name is Natalie. I’m married to David, and Mum to two children – Isabelle, who is 9, and Oliver, who is 6. I am also the proud owner H48 Recruitment.

H48 is a boutique Recruitment and HR Consultancy.  I deal with all types and sectors of recruitment but I specialise in part time and flexible working.  I also give HR support to businesses that haven’t got an HR presence.

What inspired me to start my business?

I felt that flexible working was overlooked. There didn’t seem to be many recruiters out there specialising in this area. No one was ready to listen to candidates and understand what they were looking for in a part-time role.

Whilst on maternity leave with my first child, I was made redundant. I found there were no recruiters who understood that I wanted to find that perfect ‘work-life balance’, and not lose my identity as a working professional while being a mum.

How do I support flexible working?

I find flexible working opportunities for people. I know what a challenge it is to find a flexible role in a profession that you enjoy, and to find an employer who is aware of how flexible working can look. I listen to my candidates and use my HR expertise to educate businesses about how they can benefit from flexible working. Hopefully, I can then connect the two.

I have seen many changes in the flexible working market. Many more businesses are aware of the positive results of employing staff on a flexible basis — such as greater staff commitment and retention, and finding exceptional qualified people who can get the job done!

And it’s so positive and refreshing to see many more people fighting for flexible working rights. These include Mother Pukka, Pregnant then Screwed and Digital Mums to name but a few!

Unfortunately, some businesses still don’t understand how flexible working can work for them. They need to be educated that by offering flexible hours they can attract fantastically skilled people to their organisations.
