Are you Pregnant in the Pandemic?

Experienced Midwife and Sonographer, Amanda Bastianelli tells us how she is helping pregnant women during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

I have worked as a midwife for over 20 years and have always felt passionate and privileged to be a part of the wonderful journey into parenting that all families face. I’ve delivered thousands of babies and scanned thousands of women each with a different story to tell of their journey during pregnancy.

However, in the current Covid-19 pandemic crisis, the pregnancy journey for women is unprecedented and many pregnant women are feeling worried, confused and isolated in what should be one of the most positive and happiest experiences.

In our national health sector, we are fantastic at providing good quality care for families embarking upon their parenting journey. However, recently we have seen that the type of support has now changed. Some midwife appointments are now held ‘virtually’ and sadly partners are not permitted to antenatal and scan appointments. Every hospital trust has different procedures in place for pregnant women and so the general advice in the national media can be often be confusing and sometimes frightening if you are unsure about what to expect.

I always had the idea to launch a centre for expectant parents and families to access a wide variety of services to support the NHS services already offered, but with the Covid-19 pandemic I decided that now was the right time to do so as now more than ever my services were needed.

And so Mum, Midwife & Me was born! We are a team of 6 local experienced midwives and healthcare professionals from Kent with a total of over 109 years’ experience to offer support, guidance, skills and expertise during the pandemic and beyond.
