Imposter Syndrome, You Can do Anything With a Little Confidence

Written by Jackie Wells, Lighthouse Life Coaching

Do you ever feel like a fraud or that you don’t belong? It’s funny isn’t it when you feel like an imposter, but actually others see you as some kind of hero. So why do you feel like and imposter and how do you stop it?

  • Don’t undersell yourself, if you want something, get it! If you want that pay rise, write down the things you are great at, how you can prove that you have worked to get it. If you don’t sell yourself, no one else is going to do it for you in the same way.
  • Remind yourself just how amazing you are, write it down if it helps, no matter how small. Did you smile and tell someone just how fantastic they looked today, making their day much better and giving them the confidence, they needed? Did you win an award? Give yourself a pat on the back, that’s a job well done.
  • Stop being a perfectionist. You read it right! No one is perfect, no that’s right no one! Everyone messes up and makes mistakes, well if we didn’t how on earth would we ever learn. Mistakes make us stronger, help us to learn more about ourselves and others and what works well and of course not so well.
  • Surround yourself with amazing people, if they feel amazing and inspiring, it’ll make you feel as though you are the same. Just don’t compare yourself to them and think you need to be better or have the need to compete. Embrace them, work with them and celebrate each other accomplishments. Share ideas and be creative, you’ll learn from them and they’ll learn from you and as a team you can create amazing things.
  • You aren’t superman/ woman, you can’t be everything to everyone. If you find yourself staying late at the office every night even when everyone else has got home; if you don’t have time for hobbies or downtime; you feel you have to work harder and more than anyone else, then you are a classic superman/ woman. Make those changes today!
  • The failed expert is someone who tries to learn as much as possible but fears they will never know as much as they should or as anyone else. You maybe a certificate whore who will go on any training course available just to get that certificate or accreditation. Being a failed expert will hold you back from applying from jobs because you feel you don’t meet every point in the criteria.

Can you shift imposter syndrome? Of course, you can 7 out of 10 people will say that they have suffered from it at some point in their careers. You may need help, this could come in the shape of a Life Coach. They will help you to recognise that you are amazing, you do have weaknesses, but you also have many more strengths. Celebrate your weaknesses and use them to grow. After all, you can do anything with a little confidence.
